Hey, I'm Rob Ballentine
I'm holding Alice in the picture here, she was the first picture that when I finished I said "Wow! I did that!". And she reminds me just how capable anyone can be after they start their journey with pastel pencils.
I started drawing pets and animals by accident when I was 53, right during the Covid pandemic. What began as a simple portrait for a friend unexpectedly went viral, and suddenly, I was flooded with commissions. That’s when I realised I had to learn fast - not just to improve my skills, but also to speed up my process because the requests just kept coming.
The only problem? I had zero experience with pastel pencils. In fact, I hadn’t drawn since high school, so it all felt incredibly overwhelming. Why I chose Pastel Pencils over other mediums for realistic portraits
I found Pastels are a wonderfully forgiving and versatile medium. You can create everything from bold, vibrant portraits to soft, delicate landscapes. And they don't take hours and hours to get good.
With the right techniques, pastels allow me to capture beautiful textures like fur, glassy eyes, and even lifelike landscapes. You'll also find they're the best for realistic portraits and don't take as long to create a portrait as other mediums like coloured pencils.
I discovered that Pastel pencils allowed for superior blending, making it easy to create smooth transitions, soft edges and realistic textures. The powdery consistency makes it easier to layer and build up colours.
What I loved about them is that Pastel pencils are vibrant due to their high pigment content. The matte finish and soft texture create a painterly, luminous effect that you'll also find is ideal for expressive art and realism.
There's no doubt that mistakes can be easily corrected by erasing or lifting the pigment - this was a life saver!
